HOME ROUND, 20"

85.00

This reclaimed "home" round is made from salvaged Florida plantation wood that dates pre 1940. The color scheme is light gray and black. It is perfect for a wall hanging or propped up on a desk, mantel, etc. Please read about the authenticity below.

THIS WOOD ROUND SHOWCASES NOT ONLY A PIECE OF ART, BUT A PIECE OF US HISTORY AS IT IS COMPOSED OF THREE SEPARATE HOMES. THE GRAY WOOD CAME FROM A BARN ON THE STARKEY RANCH IN ODESSA, FL AND IS ROUGHLY 90 YEARS OLD. IN 1922, THE YOUNG JAY STARKEY RESIGNED FROM HIS POST OFFICE JOB TO PURSUE HIS DREAM OF BEING A CATTLE RANCHER. HE BOUGHT 10 ACRES SOUTH OF LARGO IN PINELLAS COUNTY FOR $50 DOWN PLUS ONE HORSE AND ONE COW. OVER TIME, HE GREW THE RANCH TO MORE THAN 650 ACRES. IN 1937, AS THE GREAT DEPRESSION WANED, THEY DROVE THEIR 300-HEAD HERD TO 16,000 GRASSY ACRES CUT BY THE PITHLACHASCOTEE AND ANCLOTE RIVERS IN SOUTHWEST PASCO COUNTY.
THE STRIP OF WEATHERED GRAY WOOD CAME FROM A PLANTATION ON LADY LAKE THAT BELONGED TO “SCUTTER,” THE CHAUFFEUR OF THE INFAMOUS MA BARKER-KARPIS GANG. MA BARKER WAS MOTHER TO FOUR SONS WHO RAN CRIMINAL MASTER PLANS FROM BANK ROBBERY TO KIDNAPPING. THEY ORIGINALLY MOVED TO CHICAGO, BUT ENDED UP IN SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA AS THEY DID NOT WANT TO WORK FOR AL CALPONE. MA’S EXACT CONTRIBUTION IS UNKNOWN; SOME SAY SHE WAS THE FORCE BEHIND THE ACTS, OTHERS SAY SHE JUST KEPT THEIR SECRET. EITHER WAY, SHE IS ONE OF THE ONLY WOMAN TO TOP THE FBI MOST WANTED LIST. IN THE END, THE SONS MANAGED TO STEAL THREE MILLION DOLLARS IN THREE YEARS. THEY CHOSE TO HIDE OUT IN OKLAWAHA, FL, BUT THEIR CRIMINAL RUN ENDED WHEN FBI RAIDED THEIR HOME. “SCUTTER,” WHOSE REAL NAME WAS WILLY WOODBURY, WENT ON TO TELL THIS STORY FOR YEARS IN EXCHANGE FOR A NICKEL.
THE BLACK WOOD CAME FROM THE CEILING OF AN 1870 PLANTATION IN MICANOPY, FL, MAKING THIS PARTICULAR WOOD OVER 147 YEARS OLD.

SO THE STORY GOES!
